COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Firearm Orientation Course is designed for individuals who are considering purchasing their first firearm and have little to no prior experience. This introductory program provides a clear, comprehensive foundation for understanding firearm ownership, safety, and responsibility. Whether participants are exploring handguns, rifles, shotguns, or simply seeking general knowledge, this course equips them with the essential information needed to make informed and confident decisions.
Throughout the course, participants will learn the fundamental rules of firearm safety, including safe handling practices, proper loading and unloading procedures, and essential range etiquette. We will also cover the legal requirements and step‑by‑step process of purchasing a firearm, including background checks, waiting periods, and COLORADO specific regulations.

Because choosing the right firearm can feel overwhelming, the course includes an overview of the major firearm categories—handguns, rifles, and shotguns—highlighting their basic functions, common uses, and key differences. This helps participants identify which type of firearm best aligns with their needs and comfort level.

Responsible ownership extends beyond the purchase, so we will also discuss safe storage practices, including secure storage options, preventing unauthorized access, and best practices for households with children or guests. Participants will receive guidance on the Concealed Carry Weapon (CCW) process, including eligibility, training expectations, and legal responsibilities, with personalized advising available based on each participant’s goals.

In addition, the course provides an introduction to relevant firearm laws, such as transportation requirements and the responsibilities associated with lawful ownership. The goal is not only to educate new owners but to promote a culture of safety, awareness, and respect for the law.

By the end of the Firearm Orientation Course, participants will have a solid understanding of what it means to own a firearm responsibly—from the moment of purchase to everyday safe handling. This course serves as an essential first step for anyone beginning their journey into firearm ownership.
